Photos from 2008 Deltana Pipeline Run

In about 2002, the Pipeline Run in the Late Night Sun was formed under the Safe Schools Grant through the Delta Greely School District. Since then, the run has had its ebb and tide. This year, the Sloan families and their businesses, The Buffalo Center Drive In and the Jitter Junction Espresso, sponsored the event. I believe there were about 70 participants. It was fun to see the walkers/runners. Here are some photos. Thank you to the participants, the Sloan family & the Deltana Fair for encouraging the continuation of the run.

4 Weekends of Flea Markets

Is it still summer? Can you smell the change of weather? I hope not! While I am glad we don' t have layers of smoke from forest fires and we do have rain for our crops, I still miss more sun! But it's time to clean out our homes and this is a great opportunity for the neighborhood and community!

It's time to clean out your garage, attic or basement and join the Sawmill Creek Lodge for 4 weekends of flea markets July 19th, August 2nd, 23rd & September 6th. Free camping if you'd like to come the night before to set up.

"to hunt for game animals" = "anuniaq" in Inupiaq

Hunting lottery picks announced
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game today released the names of winners in the spring lottery for 2008-09 permit hunts and Tier II subsistence permits.
Now you can search for your name to learn if you were issued a permit for either category.
www.adn.com

It is with the deepest respect for the animals that I am thankful for the opportunity to have red meat, birds or fish to put on my dinner table. I don't take it for granted and I realize the ethics of hunting and raising animals for meat. I've often said that we eat very well on Alaska's bounty.

On another note, the rhubarb is nearly ready for me to pull. I heard wild strawberries are out and by the end of the month, blueberries will be ready.

I "applaud" these ladies = "pattakula"

Jackie Nelson can wine and dine you in no less class than a fine restaurant. This is what we do in Alaska, in rural Alaska. Visiting and dining on the splendor of one's work is incredible. Jackie could and should write a book about her life in Alaska, if she hasn't already done so. Jackie has worked for the schools and mushed across river to get to work for years. She puts up hay on her farm on Tanana Loop Road.

The other ladies? You'll find it difficult not to go to a community event in Delta and not run into one or all of them. These ladies know the meaning of community involvement. Whether it is for the library, school, city projects, school sports, photography, art or fundraiser~you'll find them there.

I suppose it is no different in other small towns around the nation, but in interior Alaska, it takes a little more effort to go the distance in any weather to help make the community a better place to live. Hands down, a great group of ladies who make a difference. Thank you.

It's official-we have summer!

While the iris blooms and the horseflies bite, we get all the sun in we can. The hay crop is cut and we're readying the baler. It's time to count bison and elk calves. The fuel prices dictate the number of times that I travel to Delta and Fairbanks. Next year's fertilizer & fuel costs frighten most everyone and especially those who rely on a profit in their business ventures.
