Sullivan Roadhouse & Acacia Floral's Advice for Fall

Today is the day to attend the Sullivan Roadhouse. See details on the Delta News Web header.

I took these photos of some of the flowers to say goodbye for another season to the lovely blanket of colors, smell and textures that the roadhouse provides for visitors and local residents. We are so fortunate to have such a site here in Delta. Enjoy.

It's time to clip some of your flowers and dry them for wonderful winter cards with summer blossoms or enjoy the last of the fresh ones in your kitchen or dining room.
  • I called Lisa from Acacia Floral & Gifts for some garden hints this morning. She said:

  • "Don't quit feeding your perennials as they are storing their food for the next month. Don't give up on them.

  • Don't mulch your strawberries...if you do so, that's where the mice will gravitate towards and they'll eat them all.

  • Start pulling your garden crops or keep them covered at night.

  • Trees are setting in, let them do their fall thing. Do not plant any new ones, it's a little late. If you have a tree you didn't get planted, keep it in a protected area and allow plenty of snow to keep it covered for the winter.

  • GET OUT AND ENJOY THE FALL COLORS!"

Grandparents Day and Labor Day is coming up!

"Musician" in Delta = "atuqtuuraqti" in Inupiaq Eskimo

We really had some great music at the Deltana Fair. Recently, the Clearwater Lodge had "Girls with Guitars" and I heard they were very good. Sawmill Creek Lodge had "Above Ground" which is a classic rock band over last weekend too and they'll be back this Saturday night (http://www.endofroadrally.blogspot.com). I am also helping them organize an "End of Harvest 4 - Day Party"..www.endofharvest.blogspot.com for details.

Michael Kingston has been instrumental in our music world here in Delta Junction (not to mention that he's a great photographer too). Here's a pic of him with Sawmill Creek Lodge owner, Thomas Pyatt, playing at the Deltana Fair. (http://www.lastfrontiermusic.blogspot.com/) I'm looking for more photos of the motocross events (http://www.deltamx.blogspot.com/ )and music to put on the blogs.

Recently, I heard from Michael and he gave me 2 sites for local music here in Delta. Here's Michael's note:
"I work with Solomon Alcain, Jr. and I think you might want to meet him about music in this area…he is the Man and has a local business: http://www.alpha33.com/
We have started the DME: http://www.deltamusicemporium.com/ and Sol is helping many local musicians. " Pass the word!

Cranberries (berry = asiaq) in Inupiaq & Hay

Cranberries have had their first frost as had the grain, hay is being baled.....it's been a tough one.
Bear maulings have been making the news all summer.
Inupiaq words for bear :
"black bear = iggagriq"
"brown bear, grizzly = aklaq"
"mythical ten-legged polar bear = qupqugiaq"
"polar bear = nanuq"

Got your lined "raincoat" on? = "silannaaq" in Inupiaq

I've heard that this season is 20 days behind and 20 degrees colder.

The governor declared the interior a disaster area due to the amount of rainfall and subsequent river flooding. The same goes for agriculture in the interior. Hay farmers' tractors travel in rim deep water as they try to get their hay cut. The first cutting was meager, we've had a frost and the second cutting is in jeopardy. As we look at our animals, I hope that we can produce enough to feed them and not have to cut our herd to compensate for the hay shortage.

What did June & the first week in August entail? Dip-netting for reds at the Copper River, camping and boating at Tangle Lakes and learning to do crazy quilts with Lonnie Miller. All is not lost!

Social Events, Flowers & Trees

It's that time of year, there is snow on the mountains & even in SE Alaska. We all begin to watch the mountain tops. Preparation is in the air. We had a flea market at the Sawmill Creek Lodge yesterday-antiques, clothes, housewares, etc. I didn't sell a bison hide but I worked on the bison skull mosaic artwork that I'm completing for the Delta Lions Club as they host the International Bison Conference this year in Delta (October). I met 3 sets of new neighbors and was thrilled to see others I haven't seen all summer. We had about 75 people come through.

My neighbor, 10 miles away & that is a neighbor, had a Pampered Chef Party and we had fun, drinking tea, coffee, lemonade & ate some fresh blueberry & strawberry cake. Blue berries are out but if the skies are any indication, you'd better work fast at getting them off the bushes before the rain beats them off.

This is also the time bears are checking the beary - berry patches out so wear your bells, make noise and don't surprise our furry creatures. Got my salmon froze and will start smoking some for the next month to send out as presents.

It's time to gather with friends and family before we set into the fall months, hunting/fishing & then prepare for winter. Can we just get our summers to be 1 month longer?

We also had a ladies night out at a friend's home and the nugget bluegrass lawn was spectacular along with the trees, flowers, food and company. Thank you good neighbor.
