"Tangle" Lakes = "illak" in Inupiaq Eskimo

There's something about wood heat in a cabin, the lingering fall and snow-capped mountains. Meandering through the 2 lane highway on to Paxson and then Tangle Lakes brought a serenity hard to find at the ranch. I suppose if I built my cabin on the butte at the ranch, it'd be nearly as good. I've come to realize that if you can't have a home on a waterfront-be at ocean, lake or river-you'd best get out whenever you can and enjoy the sweet simple comforts of camping. Then too, have you ever wondered why people spend their adult lives building a home only to retire and spend most of their time at a cabin, lake house of sorts?

Check Off for Fall

Some birds head south while others look for scraps to hoard for the winter.
Clean up that grill!

  1. Finish harvest (whether its grain, hay or produce) It's calling for snow Sunday in the Delta area (or so I've heard).
  2. Put your hoses away & close off spigots

  3. Cut back perennials & pull annuals (flowers)

  4. Dump soil out of pots and put them away.

  5. Make sure you don't have any trash out that would attract bears.

  6. Say goodbye to the birds flying south and the bears looking for a winter den.

Wes loved snowmachines (now is a very talented snowmachine engineer/mechanic), raced them, listened to all sorts of music, sang & is a great supporter of our 1972 class reunions.
Enjoy!

Flying, Family, Friends and Fall Photos

The Matanuska Valley

Traveling by ERA to and from Anchorage in the fall. Beautiful sites!

Grandson, Colton, hamming it up & photo showing the grouse Wes got. Daughter Leslie, and grandson, Landon Russell-charming little guy.
Meetings in Palmer at the Division of Agriculture. Ran into Cousin Tommy Blatchford and Aunt Lena at the airport waiting for a flight from Kenai.

I'd love to see Delta get a commercial kitchen to be able to supply vendors with a DEC approved kitchen to sell items at the Farmers' Market and other events. I hope we can move in that direction. It's a real push in the lower '48 with the swing towards "buying local", "homegrown" and "made in the USA".
Do you have for rent or interested in renting a commercial kitchen?

Alaska's Food Security

Pardon me while I wonder about Alaskan's food security. As our generation moves further and further away from our grandparents' way of life (we've probably all had one grandparent who has come from a family farm), I wonder about Alaskan's food security.

Moose, caribou and other wildlife season is upon us. For those of us lucky enough to fill our freezers with Alaska's bounty of berries, meat and fish-I once again say thank you to our wonderful surroundings. That doesn't mean I don't worry about those who can't get out there and produce their own livestock, hunt, fish and gather berries, I worry alot.

This season alone, we have 3 elk producers and one dairyman going out of business. With each loss, Alaska loses its food security base. We have a Division of Agriculture. What some have suggested is that we need a Department of Agriculture & Energy-not simply a division. We also can use agricultural land to produce biofuels, there are barley burning stoves, wind farms and more. Food and shelter are paramount for existence. As we have moved further and further from the era of the family farms, we need to secure a food base for ourselves along with an alternative energy base. This is even more true for Alaskans.
