It's "cold" = "alappaaq" in Inupiaq

It's cold, or it appears so. "Sun-dog" out. Bright, bright light this morning.
The camprobbers come by to steal whatever food they can. Magpies and ravens float in the sky looking for food to eat and store.

The grocery store shelves along the milk/dairy section were bare of cream. I wonder if a shipment didn't come in. I needed cream to make caramel apples & homemade icecream. We take so much for granted when we can go to the stores and pick up any items we need. Remember buying cases of fruit to can or freeze? I wish I had some of that now!

Quilting every friday at the Calico Cow Quilt shop until 9 PM. I have opened my basement up for quilting & crafts (Wed & Thurs 1 - 9 PM) for those in the neighborhood who'd like to work on Christmas gifts. It helps with cabin fever. It also gets some gifts completed.

"Order" your cake now = "qanniq" in Inupiaq Eskimo

It's winter and time to begin your arts and crafts or time to travel south, whichever you prefer. I experimented with a fiberart scene, not too successful but I learned a new technique. In creating a wallhanging using embellishment the instructions are:

  1. Find various embellishment odds & ends such as silk flowers & leaves, ribbons, fuzzy yarn, beads, fabric, etc.
  2. Separate the stems and veins from the silk flowers & leaves.

  3. Stitch one end of a layer of backing, batting, background fabric and netting.

  4. Begin placing your idea of your wallhanging whether it's an Alaskan scene, flower garden or favorite abstract collection.

  5. Spray #505 adhesive spray on the background fabric and place your pieces on the fabric.

  6. Bring the netting over the top of the piece.

  7. Begin quilting around the pieces. When you find yourself quilting only on the background, free float stitch on this area and continue throughout the entire piece of artwork.

  8. Border or keep your edges of the artwork raw as you please.

  9. You can add embellishments on top of the netting to add more dimension. I hot glued this on.

"Birthday" for Gayle = "annivik"

Crowned with a tierra, earrings and feathered boa from Granite View Gifts, we surprised neighbor Gayle with a birthday party....we had moose burgers, smoky dogs, chili, potato salad, chips, apple pie, angel food cake & lemon filled cake with 7 minute icing.

Here's a picture of Gayle's horse, Rick. What characters they are when you drive down and visit them (the horses I mean). Gayle and Jim live 10 miles down the highway and about 18 miles back on a dirt and heavily bouldered road, Cummings Road. They have built a beautiful home. They fish and farm. Can you think of anything crazier? Hard work on both occupations.

Happy, happy birthday Gayle!

Mariyana Bezhenar weds Sergey in Oregon

Mariyana + Sergey: Wedding
Posted: 29 Sep 2008 03:01 PM CDT

"It was really nice and warm day for Mariyana and Sergey to get married. Everybody was happy and looked amazing. Just look at Mariyanaʼs pictures. She was just a gorgeous bride! Olga Voronov (Madame de Fluers) provided beautiful flowers once again. I donʼt have any hesitation to recommend her to my clients because I am sure she will do a great job.

It was also a busy day. We had very tight schedule and didnʼt have time to go and shoot some bride and groom portraits. So, when the reception was over it was already dark. They let limo go and stayed with me to shoot some portraits. It was all dark around, no city lights and only place which had some lighting was the place by the reception hall with some columns connecting two buildings. We were shooting for two hours until bride almost felt asleep and my camera stopped locking focus and could focus anymore. Check out some of my favorite images below and, please, leave some comments in the comment section below. They are always welcome. If you donʼt know what to say, just congratulate the couple, or tell me what is your favorite image is."

Flowers: Olga Voronov (Madame de Fluers), 503.760.1000
Ceremony: Church of Grace
Reception: St. George Orthodox Church
