How "active" are you in the winter? = "iqiit" in Inupiaq Eskimo

What do you do in the winter? You work on projects if you have time. You cook and bake, put on pounds, try to get some exercise in and call family & friends. Traveling to Fairbanks is a challenge these days so that may be alittle limited. Here are some photos of some ladies quilting at the Calico Cow Quilt Shop in town (www.thecalicocow.com). View the Forget Me Knot Quilters' Guild Website at www.forgetmeknotquilters.com. The Festival of Lights is happening. Today, the Greenhouse Conference is on board in Anchorage. The Delta Farm Forum will be held the end of the month (Feb. 28) and the Vegetable Conference will be held in Palmer Feb. 10 & 11th. Lots of conferences happening this winter/spring before the constant daylight and warm season approaches.
Predictions from the Farmers' Almanac is a a late spring but a warm/dry summer.

"Green" Hay = "sunaaqtaaq" lunch

Feeding the younger herd-i.e., 5 years and younger, still takes caution. The green hay is a welcome treat even though the bison have vegetation to eat off the 900+ acres. Scott raises his hand as he departs the bale of hay and heads back to the tractor, this extends his height so the bison have a better opportunity to see him. He could easily get hurt mistakenly by them as they feed. They still have a very uneasy eye on niece Lisa, as she takes photos of them. They may be inside a fence but they are never truly domesticated.

It's "down" below zero = "anmuk" in Inupiaq

A young bull moose greeted me with his presence in our yard this New Year's Day.

Cow moose that's been hanging the neighborhood looking into windows.

A neighborhood New Year's Eve Party at the Ward's Residence. -52oF and we all went, some plugged their vehicles in while others (like our Ford Diesel pickup) left them running, others walked...yep, they walked-the Brown's trekked the 1 mile plus all bundled in snowsuits, hats, and gloves....brave souls but we had a very nice time.

Ben Schultz joined the party and gives mom a welcome hug!

Happy 2009! Thank you Marcia and Bill for opening your home to the neighborhood once again!
