Whose "hoof" print is that? = "kukik"

It was a real snowstorm yesterday, with wind, drifts and snowfall. These horses down the road from us were out in the elements, eating hay and generally having a good time. They were beautiful.

Pickled fish for "dinner?" = "nullautaq"

It's white out except for the remnants of the winter items, such as the shovel for "snow?", the poles to support the trees so the moose won't damage them while they romp around the yard eating grasses & willows and the old dishwasher discarded next to the Big Chief Smoker waiting for warmer temps to smoke some more salmon.

Pickled Fish

Cut fish into chunks
Mix 4 cups white sugar
5/8 cup canning salt
Soak fish for 1 week. Drain, rinse and let stand in ice water for 1 hour. Pack in gallon jar with sliced onions. Mix 4 cup white vinegar 4 cup sugar, 2 Tbls. mixed pickling spice.
Bring to a boil, cool and pour over fish. Store in refrigerator.

How do you "explain" cabin fever? = "uqausigi"

quilts by some of the quilters in Delta Junction: see more at www.forgetmeknotquilters.com

How do you explain cabin fever? I suppose, its lack of daylight and exercise. When those of us locals used to be able to get on Fort Greely without a special pass, the swim pool was a perfect remedy. There's something about the light, the swim and the water that makes you smile. Then we'd head to the sauna and breath in that moist hot air.

Some of us do artwork, quilt, do photography, hike, fish, write and do whatever it takes to make it through each dark winter season. You say the winters don't bother you? Hmmmm, let me ask your partner, friends or co-workers. Hawaii always sounds so good in January, doesn't it?

It was below -20 oF yesterday and they are calling for a snowfall today. Heading to Fairbanks to attend my first Anchorage Chamber of Commerce luncheon - that's right, in Fairbanks. How cool is that? I loved it when the Alaska Federation of Natives Conference rotated back and forth between Fairbanks and Anchorage, we need to continue to offer both major cities these prime events. I don't think we'll see it in 2009 in Fairbanks though, disappointing for me.

The "Polar Bear" Plunge 2009 = "nanuq"

They call it February Funniest, they do. It's when we've had too much darkness, too much time indoors and our minds get alittle jumpy I think. Not too many years ago, some Delta residents sat around and said, "What can we do for the February Funnies?" They came up with the Festival of Lights and its been going on ever since.
Here's a picture of how we end the Galleria with a big splash - the Polar Bear Splash. Enjoy!

Who has your "heart" today = "uumman" in Inupiaq Eskimo

It's near Valentine's Day and Acacia Floral said its by far their busiest time of year. They do up some beautiful bouquets and arrangements. Here's a picture of the simplest sugar cookies from Martha Stewart website. She filled hers with jelly and double laryerd the cookies, I just made the sugar cookies, cooled the dough in the fridge for at least an hour and cut them out. I baked them and then decorated them with plain old powdered sugar & water icing topping them off with the prettiest little candies I got at Michaels' You could also use colored sugar. You can buy this sugar or make your own by mixing your favorite color with sugar and laying it out on a cookie sheet to dry. Then place it in a shaker to use whenever. Mine aren't nearly as perfect as Martha but I bet they taste just as good!

I also saw where you can take real roses, a flower at a time and spray, brush or dip the tips in glue and then glitter them. How special these natural flowers look after alittle shine.

Enjoy your Valentine's Day weekend!

"Hawk Ow" = "niaquqtugruk" in Inupiaq Eskimo

Every feel like everyone's ignoring you or better yet, ever feel like ignoring everyone?
I think this is a hawk owl. Scott took the picture after he walked past this owl, came in and got my trusty Cannon and proceeded to take more photos. You know you're an official Alaskan when you begin picking out seed packets in February. I swear I smell the earth under that snow! Isn't it time for the leaves to bud out?

Oh well, see you at the Festival of Lights Gala! I'll be selling bison hides, offer deals at IGA groceries and the photo of the latest FMKQ Guild quilt.

Say Goodbye to January

Do you feel the daylight creeping in? How many minutes of daylight are we increasing? 6+ minutes of daylight increasing and you can really tell. Take a deep breath, enjoy and creep outside whenever you can bear the temps as fresh air is our friend. Okay, not frozen fresh air but fresh air nonetheless.
